About

In 1909, Celie, a young black woman from Tennessee, is already a mother at fourteen. She is given in marriage to a widowed farmer, Albert, father of four children, who treats her like a servant. He even forces his mistress, Shug, a singer, into her home. But Celie befriends Shug. The singer leaves to pursue her career elsewhere, but returns to visit Celie from time to time. With Shug's encouragement, Celie decides to leave Albert and start her own business as a seamstress.

Quincy Jones was the film's composer and co-producer.
